Cambridge Szeged Society Garden Party

The annual garden party of the Cambridge Szeged Society was held in the wonderful setting of the Fellows’ Garden at Clare College. On a perfect summer’s afternoon punts glided lazily by while we chatted, nibbled and sipped.

The company included two former Mayors (Sheila Stuart and David White), Dr Julian Huppert MP and Mr Andrew Duff MEP.

Julia Seiber Boyd, the Chair of the Society, reviewed the past years many activities and looked forward to some delights to come, many of them musical and some linking to next year’s bicentenary of the birth of Franz Liszt.

Next year will also be the 25th anniversary of the Szeged twinning. Andrew Duff told me how he had been a key player in getting this agreed in those days when the Iron Curtain still seemed a permanent feature of European relations.

I am exploring what scope there is for the cost of bringing a civic delegation from Szeged for a celebration to be borne in such a way that it does not too much reduce the amount that is available for the Cambridge Szeged Society and similarly the Cambridge Heidelberg Partnership Group by way of annual grant this year.
